Daily Mile Flag
We are delighted that after so much running and effort we received our flag for doing The Daily Mile. All the classes love running every day using our Active Schools Walkway. Take a look below at our Active School Committee with our new flag.
Daily Mile at Home Challenge
The Daily Mile Step at Home Step Challenge has been created by the Laois Sports Partnership. They want to see if you can complete a mile every day for 6 weeks. 2,000 steps equals 1 mile. While we are staying safe at home, see if you can take up the challenge and do 2,000 steps every day.
Active Break Challenge
During the month of November 2018 to kick off the process of working towards our Active School Flag, we had an Active Break Challenge. We challenged each class to have an active break for ten minutes each day for four weeks. Each class managed to complete the challenge. Lots of different resources were used to help us complete this challenge such as GoNoodle, 10@10 and Just Dance.
Playground Leaders
Meet our Playground Leaders for 2018-2019, Amy Daly, Laura Scott, Hannah Fitzpatrick, Dáire Fogarty, Ali Meally, Cesire Healy, Megan Kirwan and Isabella Roe. These pupils from Sixth Class volunteered to play and teach games to the Junior and Senior Infants.
The Playground Leaders taught the children in Junior and Senior Infants different playground games such as Time Bomb, Chicken and Foxes, Red Light Green Light, Ship Sea Shore, Flush the Toliet and many many more. The Playground Leaders divided the children into three small groups and set up stations. They made sure that each group got to each station. Take a look at some of our pictures of the children having fun with the Playground Leaders.
As a new year has sprung upon us, we have trained in new Playground Leaders for the new school year 2019-2020. Pupils from 6th class have been playing with the new Junior Infants every break time, helping them integrate into school life as well as teaching them some games which they can play on the yard. The Playground Leaders ensure everyone is physically active and included in playtime. Have a look at some of our new Playground Leaders playing with the infants.
We are delighted that we have now trained in Fourth Class to be playground leaders. They are assisting the pupils in junior and senior infants on the yard, teaching and playing games with them during break and lunch times.
How Far Can We Run?
During the month of June 2019, as part of our Active Schools, we will be taking part in a running challenge. We are going to be doing the Daily Mile challenge. However we have adapted it slightly to the Daily Km. Each pupil and class are going to see whether they can run a km or part of a km each day. Three pupils from Fifth Class have been given the responsibility of keeping track of how far each class run. We will be keeping a track of the kilometres and these totals will be added together to see how far into Europe our school can run. Our challenge is to see if we can run as far as London as a school which is 597km away. Fingers crossed we reach our goal.
We are delighted to report that by the end of June 2019 we reached our goal of running as far as London. We ran a total of 600km as a school. We are delighted that all the pupils took part in the process. Well done to all the pupils for their amazing achievement.
Here are some pictures of us completing our challenge.
In October 2019 we decided to try our running challenge again. We hope to run further than we did last June. Three pupils from sixth class are keeping track of how far we run. We are going to add on our total to our total from last year and see how much further we can run from London. We hope to make it into mainland Europe.
As of November 2019 we are still completing our running challenge. We are delighted to say we have now run as far as we ran last year and we are not even finished yet. We have now run as far as Brussels in Belgium (976km), Paris in France (1073km) Amsterdam in the Netherlands (1146km) and Luxembourg (1169km). We cannot wait to see how much further we will get by the end of our running challenge.
Break and Lunch Time
We are always very active during our break and lunch times in Killadooley N.S. Our yard is clearly divided in different areas for the different classes to play in. We are very lucky to have some great activities painted on our yard which we can play on. We also use some of our great PE resources to play with during our break times. Skipping, football, hula-hoops and tag are only some of the many many games we play on the yard. We also have a policy of "Do Your talking as You're Walking" while on the yard also. Break and lunch time is one of our favourite times of the day in school.
Active School Walkway
We are delighted to have our Active School Walkway up in the school as part of our Active School Flag. It has become an amazing resource here in the school. Some of our pupils from Fifth Class took the responsibility of organising the route for our Active School Walkway. Our walkway goes all the way around our school yard and is two hundred metres long. Five laps of our yard will equal a distance of one kilometre. We used the Active School Walkway as part of our running challenge. Some classes have also used the walkway as part of an orienteering course, looking for the letters on the signs.
Active Breaks
Active breaks are something which we do on a daily basis here in Killadooley N.S. not just during the Active Break Challenge as mentioned above. All the classes love Active Breaks. GoNoodle and Just Dance are just some of our favourite websites that we use.
On days that children are unable to go outside due to weather, we ensure that all the children get a physical activity break in the classroom during the school day.

Clean Up Laois Week
All classes took part in Clean Up Laois week in April 2019. Each class was given a different area of the yard or locality to clean up. The pupils walked around and picked up any rubbish that they could find. Take a look at the pupils from Fifth and Sixth class walking around the village of Killasmeestia picking up rubbish. We worked with the local Tidy Towns Committee as part of the clean up.
Playing in the Snow
After some snow had fallen overnight last Winter, the next day school we took advantage and had an active break out in the snow.
Easter Egg Hunt
The pupils in Fifth and Sixth Class organised an Easter Egg Hunt for the Junior and Senior Infants for Easter. Fifth and Sixth Class put in great effort into organising the event. Junior and Senior Infants loved running around searching for the Easter eggs.
