B/K for the final
Trip to Donaghmore
On the 11th of April at 12:00pm we left Killadooley NS and arrived 5 minutes later at Donaghmore Workhouse. Our tour guide took us to a room with a tv in it and it playeda short documentary about Donaghmore Workhouse. When it was finished we walked across to the boy's block where you stayed until you are around 13 or 14 years old. The windows were built up high in the boy's classroom as the people who worked there did not want the boys to see their families. When they were finished their studies, they would do chores. The boys slept in this long, sort of a loft type of room. They would lie on a bag full of straw and if they were naughty they would have to sleep in the punishment room( a room behind the bedroom ). One of those bedrooms could hold a lot of boys. When we were finished in the boy's bedroom we walked across the corridor to to the master's suite. Unlike the boy's bedroom the master had a fire, an office and more importantly a proper bed. We also visited the sick bay where there was another dummy. The tour guide said that most of the people working and living in the workhouse dies of a disease called typhus. We visited the dining room where the women mostly worked. There were different doors for every group to come in a different way at a different time. The groups were: men, women, boys, girls.
There was a little flap in the door between the kitchen and the dining room so that if your mother or a wife was handing out the dinner, you would not be able to see them. After that we went to see a lot of knick kacks that were used during famine times. They were mostly donated by local people There was an old desk donated by our school!! Before we headed back to school we signed the visitors book and took a photo. 5 minutes later we arrived back to Killadooley and had our treats out on the yard!!
